DNCE is heading to some of the biggest cities in the world in the coming months as part of both the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball tour and their own headlining tour. You may know them for their infectious pop-rock hit “Cake by the Ocean” or for being fronted by ex-boy bander Joe Jonas, but there is more to this band than that! Here’s a few things to know about DNCE before they hit the road.
They have dabbled in both Broadway and Hollywood
The group was featured in Fox’s live production of Grease earlier this year along with Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens. Jonas and crew appeared as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers, providing the music during the iconic musical’s school dance scene. They performed “Born to Hand Jive,” “Rock n Roll Is Here to Stay,” “Maybe Baby,” and a 1950s-inspired version of their “Cake by the Ocean.”
They are yet to release a full album
DNCE is slated to release their first full-length studio album in one week. Given the success they’ve already achieved from their debut EP Swaay, a Billboard Top 40 effort, they are destined to gain even more notoriety following the release of their self-titled album.
Jonas is at the helm of the songwriting
The frontman is credited as a co-writer on all but one of the band’s songs from their collection, as well as serving as a co-producer on their EP Swaay.
Their name comes from a line of music
Joe Jonas has stated that the band originally earned their name from a lyric he had written for their eponymous song. The line relates to being too intoxicated to correctly spell the word “dance,” though the band’s members have gone on to say the name represents much more, including their fusion as four unique artists and not taking life too seriously.
The members have worked together before
From his time touring with brothers Nick and Kevin as the Jonas Brothers, Joe Jonas had performed with guitarist JinJoo Lee and drummer Jack Lawless, making them easy additions to the band. Jonas collaborated with Justin Tranter of the rock band Semi Precious Weapons to write songs for the band’s debut album. Working with Tranter led to Jonas adding bassist Cole Whittle (also of Semi Precious Weapons) to DNCE.
Expect to see them at upcoming award shows
Since exploding onto the music scene last year, DNCE has won an MTV Video Music, MTV Europe Music Award, and is nominated for New Artist of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group at the upcoming American Music Awards. With more award shows slated to take place in the coming months, expect to see this four-piece more frequently at them.
