DJ Khaled drops hit after hit ahead of Grateful album release

2017 just might be the year of DJ Khaled. So far the Snapchat guru has ruled magazine covers with his son, watched his chart topping songs go Platinum, teamed with Jordan to customize the Grateful3s, and collaborated with Dr. Dre creating the “Grateful Beats” headphones. We are still awaiting his cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming but the wait for his latest album, which is fully loaded with anthems, will soon be over.

Last year, DJ Khaled’s 9th album titled Major Key dropped in the same theme with his novel, The Keys. Khaled, known to share with his followers some of the “keys to life” and to success through Snapchat, furthers his advice in this motivational book, writing about how to stay away from THEY, the haters. “THEY are the people that don’t believe in you, that say that you won’t succeed. We stay away from THEY.” Khaled even collaborated with Palmer’s Cocoa Butter for a special edition THEY Block body lotion which allegedly keeps THEY away.

To express appreciation for his success surrounding his major accomplishments in 2016, DJ Khaled titles his tenth studio album Grateful, which credits his 8-month-old son Asahd as a producer. Leading up to Grateful‘s release, Khaled and Asahd gave the world four songs, two of which premiered with videos. With just a portion of his album being well-received so soon, this father-son duo is bound to prove a lot with album number ten.

“I worked my whole life for this one.”

During Grammy season in mid-February, “Shining” emerged featuring Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Khaled didn’t expect to have both superstars on the same record, because who is deserving of a blessing from the Queen and her King Hov? He first asked Jay for the feature, hesitant, since he already contributed to last year’s “I Got the Keys.” When Jay-Z agreed, DJ Khaled cautiously insisted that he pass it along to his wife for her thoughts. Bey gave the nod and there was a fresh duet for the couple, something we haven’t heard since 2013’s “Drunk in Love.” Khaled was beyond emotional after receiving the finished track and after a few tweaks released “Shining” immediately, sending it straight to no. 1 on the Billboard charts within hours of its debut.

“The summer’s ours!”

Second is the summer favorite, “I’m The One” featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil’ Wayne. Pulling more strings, Khaled waited for the right moment to enlist help from Justin Bieber. Although the Biebs took longer to have his chorus together than it took the rappers to write their verses, the song came together as beautiful as the flowers and greenery in DJ Khaled’s garden. The song premiered in late-April with its video simultaneously and in just two months “I’m the One” was certified Double Platinum.

“Did the Drake vocals come in yet?”

DJ Khaled teased on social media for some time that there would be another anthem. Given the success from last summer’s “For Free” featuring Drake, it was only right for the “We The Best Music” DJ to enlist the 6 God for another hit. In early June we received “To the Max,” a dance track for the popular dance style in Miami called “jooking.” And in the time between this release and Grateful, there was indeed, another one.

“The Rihanna vocals are in!”

“Wild Thoughts” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller was an unexpected release of both song and video, coming a week after Drake’s feature and days before Grateful’s official release date. THEY mocked Khaled. “THEY said I couldn’t get Rihanna on my album. Be ready!” DJ Khaled warned multiple times over Snapchat. But were we ready? The Caribbean Queen stepped out to a remake of Carlos Santana’s “Maria, Maria”  alongside the “Don’t” artist and caused nostalgia along with more excitement and appreciation for the work of this superstar DJ.

The rest of Khaled’s album has a slew of features from the most popular artists today, making it an eclectic blend of R&B, hip-hop and rap, complete with a dash of dance music, a sprinkle of pop with a splash of reggae. Is the Grammy that DJ Khaled’s hungry for due to him upon release of what is said to be his greatest body of work? Check out the track list below.
